Farha Khatun

Filmmaker

Farha is a filmmaker, editor from India. After receiving her professional training in Editing from Roopkala Kendro, Farha has edited several documentary films, short fiction and feature films. It is through the language of documentaries that she articulates her politics. In her films therefore she engages with stories of marginalised - people whose stories would otherwise get lost in a world where mostly power speaks. Through her lens thus one comes across the story of a forgotten trans footballer, story of a woman from Bhopal who challenges patriarchy within her community and defies norms to become an activist in her 60s, story of a lone fighter who builds a forest, story of people engaged in a lost profession.

She is a two-time recipient of the President's National Film Award in India for the Best film on Social Issues for her directorial debut 'I am Bonnie' and her first feature-length film ‘Holy Rights’. The latter was broadcasted on KLIK Indonesia and SBS Australia. Both films have bagged prestigious awards and were widely screened. Her personal journey as a woman, made her focus more on women's lives, hence, gender serves as a critical lens in her work.

She is one of the founding members of Bitchitra Collective, a secular and inclusive network of Indian & diasporic women & non-binary filmmakers dedicated to the values of equity, justice and diversity.

Farha serves as a guest faculty at the Satyajit Ray Film & Television Institute (SRFTI), Roopkala Kendro (Film and Social Communication Institute) , Assam University in Silchar and Mrinalini Dutta Mahavidyapith. The guest faculty for the film appreciation course conducted by the Bengal government’s Information and Cultural Affairs Department also has her on board.

She curated a package of 12 fiction and non-fiction films under the theme of Identity for the 16 th Signs Films Festival, Kerala and helped in organising the first edition of Citizen Nagar Film Festival in Ahmedabad, Gujarat.

She was the lead actor in Debalina’s critically acclaimed film ‘If You Dare Desire’ for which she received the best actress award at Pune International Queer Film Festival for the film.

Farha has also served as a selection committee member for 15th International Documentary and Short Film Festival of Kerala (IDSFFK) and Jury member for 9th International Film Festival of Shimla, 13th International HALF Film Festival, 30th Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF) & 38th IDA Documentary Awards.
